Sample Work

The aim of this 4 day course is to give students an introduction to gemstone carving. You will start work with a relatively soft material as you are introduced to the carving processes moving on to harder stone as you gain in confidence with the supplied tools. Seeing a shape materialise out of the stone is always exciting but then comes the hard part in smoothing and polishing the gem. You will require patience as this takes time but is very rewarding as the beautifully finished carved gem reveals it's self.

Students are supplied with a selection of rough material to choose from and some basic tools to get started. If you wish to bring your own rough materials please contact inthestudio with a list of the Gemstones you are bringing.

It is suggested you think about ideas for your carvings, three dimensional shapes are suggested, things like seeds, shells, fossils driftwood etc. even pictures of pleasing shapes can help provide ideas and inspiration. The stone itself may suggest a shape.
Please bring an apron, overall or change of cloths (changing area available on site) as this is dirty work.
