Keum
Boo
The tutor Kye-Yeon Son is an expert
in this field of jewellery making and an
internationally recognised metal smith.
She is Associate Professor at the Nova Scotia
College of Art and Design.
Day One
The day begins with a brief history of Keum
Boo, a Korean surface decoration. Tools
and materials used for this process will
be discussed together with the possible
modification of some tools.
Kye will demonstrate how to prepare the
24ct gold sheet and turn it into the gold
foil used for this technique of jewellery
manufacture. A demonstration of depletion
gilding silver will be shown in preparation
for students to prepare their own.
Next a discussion and demonstration of fusing
gold foil by torch onto flat sheet silver
(either sterling or fine silver sheet).
Then a variety of methods for producing
interesting patterns is shown.
In the afternoon, students will start and
prepare their own metals for a brooch designed
by them, with Kye's assistance. The brooch
will be made and a brooch pin back will
be soldered into position.
The day will finish with different methods
of surface finishing.
Day Two
Demonstration will commence with fusing
gold onto a domed surface with a hot plate,
an alternative to a torch.
Different options of producing three dimensional
designs using keum boo will be discussed.
Students will then be able to work on their
second piece of Keum Boo, a pendant.
This course is for students
with some experience of soldering and therefore
is not suitable for the complete beginner.
Kye will be bringing gold
for each student and the cost will be £25.00
per person payable during the course. (more
gold foil will be available to purchase
should you wish to do so)
Students will provide their own piece of
flat sheet sterling or fine silver in either
0.8mm or 1mm, large enough for the 2 projects.
(the school will have this for sale should
you not wish to bring your own).
