Roger Young, tutor for this course
has lectured at The Gemmological and Gem
Testing Laboratories (now known as 'Gem
A') in London for many years.
Roger provides all the professional
equipment used during the course, each student
being allocated a machine after choosing
one of three types of cut.

1. Produce a faceted Quartz
stone with a similar cut to a round diamond.
2. Make a piece of 'Intarsia'.
Lapis and other contrasting natural ornamental
stones are sliced and bonded together
to form a multilayered sandwich which
is then cut to produce a chequerboard
effect. This method is used in native
North American Indian jewellery.
3. Cut and polish a Cabochon
stone, chosen from a variety of natural
stones (up to 15mm).
Students are asked to advise when booking
their chosen method of cutting, to enable
Roger to provide the correct machines.
This course is suitable for students with
no previous experience.
