In The Studio Jewellery School
Course Descriptions

WorkshopClasses are limited in numbers depending on the jewellery course. Tea and Coffee always available. Residential includes continental breakfast.

The converted 'Old Barn' and other ancient outbuildings contain the splendid jewellery workshops. The studio has two fully equipped workshops, each accommodating around 6 students and a lecturer allowing two separate courses to be held at the same time. There is an additional lecture room, where students may gather around a master bench for demonstrations. 'In the Studio' now boasts its own casting workshop allowing casting to take place on the premises during the casting course.

Jewellery Making Introduction:
This course covers the use of tools, workshop discipline and the techniques of piercing, soldering and finishing. Students may expect to make a pendant or key fob and a simple stone set finger ring to a high standard.

The course is structured for students to become confident and proficient with soldering. The production of a bangle and a pair of earrings is envisaged.

Fusing with Argentium Silver:
Argentium, the new .925 silver allows us to granulate with ease. Ronda teaches how to work with this metal without the use of solder for constructing jewellery.

Acid Free Etching and Rivetting:
This course with acid free etching allows students to create their own textures without the dangers of nitric acid. Christine will continue the course using different methods of rivetting for cold connections.

For those who wish to diversify, or develop their skills in an area of their own choosing. On prior request a demonstration of either granulation or anticlastic raising may also be included.

Chasing and Repoussé:
This basic process is one that all jewellers should master. The results being personal to each creating the play of light and shadows. Using punches and a hammer low and high relief are created on sheet metal. This process uses the plasticity of the metal.

Mokume Gane Production For The Jeweller:
The technique involves soldering and sandwiching different metals together, then braking through the layers of metals to reveal the wonderful patterns that define Mokume Gane.

Introduction to Engraving:
For the surface decoration of jewellery, the design and layout of letter forms for inscriptions and the production of heraldic devices will all be covered. Students will produce hand cut copper plates.

Covering the various applications of enamel for use in jewellery. Up to eight pieces of enamels are produced by each student.

Figurative Modelling:
Miniature people sculpted in wax and cast for use in jewellery. Castings may be produced in silver during the "Casting course".

Commencing with the 2 day 'Introduction to Jewellery Making' course and continuing with the 'Intermediate' course and other very useful jewellery making techniques. Instruction will be given in the basic techniques required to produce a tiara. This will include covering tiara bases in crystals, pearls or wire and the creation of beaded flowers, leaves and branched beads to give the tiara height and form.

Wire Wrapping:
Wire wrapping is one of the oldest jewellery making techniques. A centuries old tradition, it requires a minimum amount of tools. The jewellery made on the course uses twisted and interlocked wire with no soldering or gluing necessary. Unusual shaped stones may be set in interesting and creative ways.

InTheStudio has been asked on several occasions if we would run a course for making wedding rings. The course includes designing and fabricating of some practice rings before a final finished wedding band is made. This course is now run as a private lesson. If you are interested in Hand Engraving With Advanced Technology using compressed air and engraving in a traditional manner please Contact us. This course is being run as a one day private lesson. This takes out the hard work and allows creativity to shine through. We have a course granulating and fusing with argentium silver, the new silver and germanium mix. Our lecturer for this course will be Ronda Coryell who is a renound lecturer from the U.S.A. This course, working with argentium silver, will be in July so contact us if you would like a place reserving.
